What Is FSSAI Registration?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that regulates food safety standards across India. Every food business operator (FBO) — whether manufacturing, processing, packaging, storing, transporting, distributing, or selling food — must obtain an FSSAI registration or license. Operating without one can result in penalties up to ₹5 lakh and seizure of food products.

Three Types of FSSAI License

FSSAI Basic Registration

For small food businesses with annual turnover below ₹12 lakh (updated threshold: up to ₹1.5 crore per revised 2025 guidelines). Includes home-based food businesses, small dhabas, and petty food manufacturers. Registration issued as a 14-digit registration number.

FSSAI State License

For medium food businesses with annual turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore. Includes mid-sized manufacturers, restaurants, food processing units, and storage facilities operating in a single state.

FSSAI Central License

For large businesses with annual turnover above ₹20 crore (or ₹50 crore per revised 2025 guidelines), importers/exporters, food businesses operating across multiple states, and e-commerce food aggregators like Swiggy and Zomato. Central License is filed through FoSCoS at the national level.

Nutraceuticals (Category 13.6 under FSSAI regulations) are subject to strict compliance — all manufacturers, importers, and brand owners of nutraceuticals, health supplements, Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP), and dietary supplements must obtain an FSSAI license.
